PRESS RELEASE -- Osun: NSCI Commends INEC, FG, Security Agencies on Free, Fair Poll

The National Social Contract Initiative, NSCI, commends the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), President Goodluck Jonathan and the security agencies for ensuring that the just concluded Osun State governorship election was free, fair, credible and peaceful.

We believe that the outcome of the election is a confirmation and a testament of President Jonathan’s commitment to free and fair elections in the country ahead of the 2015 general polls.

The outcome of the governorship election puts a lie to claims by the All Progressive Congress, APC, that security measures put in place by the Federal Government to ensure a smooth and credible election were designed to favour the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the election.

We particularly condemn the attitude of the APC which always finds fault with the conduct of any election that does not favour the party or its candidate.

“It is high time the party adjusts to the new thinking that elections should not be a do-or-die affair. Rather losers should embrace the winner in the spirit of good sportsmanship”.

The NSCI commends the electorate in Osun State for their enthusiastic participation in the election and their peaceful conduct, before, during and after the election.

Also, we commend the PDP for its exemplary conduct in congratulating incumbent Governor Rauf Aregbesola, winner of the guber election. By this rare show of sportmanship, it has once again demonstrated its belief in the supremacy of the ballot and commitment to the advancement of the democratic tenet that losers must learn to accept defeat in good faith.

Similarly, the NSCI commends the PDP candidate, Senator IyiolaOmisore, for putting up a good fight.

It is our ardent belief that with the successful conduct of the Ekiti and Osun States governorship elections, the nation has moved a step forward in its march to political maturity and therefore, Nigerians have no reason to doubt the readiness of INEC to successful conduct credible, free and fair 2015 general elections.

“With the successful conduct of the Ekiti and Osun elections, there is no doubt, that the nation has moved a step further in her democratic journey as far as democratic maturity is concerned.

“We applaud the sincerity demonstrated by President Jonathan in ensuring that Nigeria evolves new a democratic culture devoid of violence, ballot snatching and other electoral malpractices as well as mayhem”.

End.

Signed:

Onazi Adadu Onazi
Assistant National Publicity Secretary, NSCI

  2. Now, it is clear that Jonathan has nothing to prove to the Nigerian people again when it comes to his commitment to electoral integrity. He did it in Edo State, and APC was the beneficiary. He did it in Ondo State with Labour Party being the beneficiary. He did in Anambra, and the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) was the beneficiary. He did it Ekiti State where the PDP was for the first time, the beneficiary. He has just done it in Osun State with the APC benefitting again. He will do it again in 2015 for the Nigeria people.

  3. The APC won the election in Osun State because there is a sitting President who cares more for the rights of the Nigerian citizens than the interests of his own political party. That was the reason President Jonathan kept his word by deploying adequate law enforcement agents to Osun State during the election.

  4. When GEJ was sworn-in, he entered into a contract with the Nigerian people to ensure credible elections by espousing the concept of "one man, one vote" and he has ensured that the fulfills that mantra. Nigeria needs a President who keeps his words as demonstrated by the outcome of elections in Edo, Ondo, Anambra, Ekiti and now Osun. GEJ keep doing it and the nation will be better for it. Kudos to INEC, FG, PDP and security our agencies.

  5. It has become very clear from the successful conduct of Osun State's gubernatorial election and the uninibited emergence of Chief Rauf Aregbesola of APC as the winner and Governor elect, that Mr, President, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has finally discovered the magic Wand for the successful conduct of elections in our Dear country Nigeria. Good people of Nigeria, the magic WAND is HEAVY SECURITY. It worked in Anambra, Edo, Ondo, Ekiti and lastly in Osun State. NSCI aplauds Mr President and urge him to apply same in 2015 as that will meet the expectation of the teeming Nigerian electorates.

  7. Oga Mr. President, some people may not like you because of your strength reminds them of their weakness, because of your character and commitment to the social contract you signed with the Nigeria people, by reason of your oath of office, but don't let the hate slow you down. Never loose sight of who you are, your promise, your vision, mission and objectives for Nigeria. Keep the fresh breathe of success streaks coming! Keep the light shinning, bright and brighter. #GEJ_CONSOLIDATION2015.

  8. Has opposition politics in Nigeria lost its way? Even in victory, Osun Governor is uttering bitter venom against the Federal Government. What really does APC people want? And I heard a clown saying on Channels TV this morning that he is shocked PDP got the votes they got in the elections. He believes those votes were rigged to close the gap. What insult on all those who voted for PDP. Are these people really thinking at all?

Must all of us become APC before they can accept an election to be credible? How come its only when they win that results are credible and even at that, they believe they won "in spite of intimidation from the Federal Government." Must greed for power be taken this far?

  9. Instead of hailing the new dispensation where the snatching of ballot boxes and other vices during election have been stamped out d man Ogbeni who before the elections called on the people of Osun to carry "Charms and weapons" to protect themselves is calling GEJ names instead of appreciating his wisdom and neutrality...which has enable the calm atmosphere he enjoys. One wonders whether the suspicion of rigging be heaped exclusive on PDP; can d Janjaweeds honestly tell us that other parties or their preferred party - APC is not guilty of it? Bros. let's tell the home truth!

If chaos were raised in that election as a result of inadequate security setup, and if peradventure lives were lost they will say he is incapable governing Nigeria. The same man took measures to prevent any lost of life or property, knowing the antecedents of the zone, yet even the ones that cannot eat food and remain for their younger ones are busy running their mouths hiding under freedom of speech and plurality of opinions and democratic right.

  10. The idea of voter intimidation is ASSUMED and no concrete evidences are available. I know two days to the elections, some hoodlums or do I say APC youths were the ones who came out to cause trouble; the response of the military was timely and I dare say it was the purpose of their presence. I am really pissed by the fact that a lot of APC apologists believe anyone who has an opposing view should be demonized. We all cannot be apologists of one party; I have always been a PDP apologists and I do not need anyone's validation because I am entitled to my decision. Is the PDP right all the times? No. Has the APC assumed "sainthood" in politics? Absolutely NO. Therefore, when we have a situation where our democracy is still in experimental stage, we should not take the high position of "The Know-All-Party" and then believe that we have the solution to all the nation's problems when in actual fact what it does is to oppose everything that government does. I am yet to know the AGENDA of the APC via its manifestos that will do better than what the PDP has got. I have scanned through its web-affiliated activities and seen no real difference on paper. In debates on national issues, the APC has since inception cried fowl over everything without engaging in ISSUES related debates. Even if I want to rethink my soft spot for PDP, I sincerely do not see a different ideological standpoint in the opposition. I still do not understand why APC won ALL the seats in the Kano Local Government Polls. I mean ALL... Has any PDP administration in any State conducted Local Government Polls where no opposition party took any seat? Even that of a Councillor? That is the reason why I am concerned where the pot keeps calling the kettle black.

  12. The Osun election has blatantly reiterated this administration's commitment in ensuring free, fair, credible and peaceful election. The APC should also join objective Nigerians in commending this culture of credible elections in our politics championed by the present administration of President Jonathan rather than than engaging in needless and unjustifiable acrimonious politics. God bless Nigeria.
